El cantante y guitarrista, James Hetfield, la escribió para una antigua novia suya, aunque ahora no recuerda por qué; algunos opinan que podría referirse a la nostalgia de pasar todo su tiempo en las giras (no matter how far), mientras que seguía estando cerca de ella (so close) con el corazón. Él la consideraba una canción muy personal y no pensaba publicarla, pero Kirk Hammett la escuchó y le gustó tanto que decidieron incluirla en el Black Album. Ahora Metallica la considera, según Hetfield, una canción dedicada a todos sus fans que están enamorados.
